Frederick William Holls agrees to call at the White House on Friday evening. Holls is hosting Fedor Fedorovich Martens, an international lawyer and councilor for the Russian department of foreign affairs. He hopes President Roosevelt can meet with Martens on Saturday as Martens would like to discuss the American sugar dispute with Russia. Holls hopes Roosevelt can also meet with Dr. von Scheele, the Lutheran Bishop of Wisby, Sweden.

During the 1896 election, Edward J. Vattmann carried out a successful “political education” program directed at Catholics. Since the nation’s foreign possessions will likely be the “basis of future attacks,” Vattmann requested, and was granted, permission to visit and report on conditions in these areas. As ordered, Vattmann will be in Washington, D.C., soon and requests to meet with George B. Cortelyou.

C., for the meetings but he needs to stay in New York to help “in the fight with Tammany.” Riis hopes to write a biography of President Roosevelt, but the offers he has received were not suitable. He does not want the book to be a “catch penny life.” He will discuss the matter with Roosevelt when they are able to meet in person.

A committee from the Chamber of Commerce of Puerto Rico will be visiting the United States and would like to meet with President Roosevelt. Governor Hunt cautions that there are Spaniards on the committee but they represent important business interests and are outside of politics. José Celso Barbosa and Sanchez Morales are reliable and were helpful in passing several pieces of legislation.
