Dr. McConnon reports on the medical relief he provided to Americans, Englishmen, and natives in Kingston, Jamaica, following the recent earthquake. He went to shore and found Americans who were not injured but fearful of mob violence. He dressed wounds and responded to medical needs as they arose, assisted in resupplying medical stores, and treated patients.

Letter from Secretary of Theodore Roosevelt to Paul W. Harrison

Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary informs Paul W. Harrison that it is currently impossible to communicate with Roosevelt because he is currently traveling down the Nile. However, he notes that Major Edgar Alexander Mearns is in charge of the medical equipment on the trip and is unlikely to want to part with it when he returns.

Letter from Edgar Alexander Mearns to Theodore Roosevelt

Edgar Alexander Mearns will be traveling on the same boat as Theodore and Kermit Roosevelt. He also has brandy, whiskey, and champagne set aside for medical use. The tools for collecting specimens will be furnished by the United States National Museum. Mearns may also have diabetes, but he defends his health and ability to make the Africa trip. Mearns also encloses a letter from Peter Holt, a scout at Yellowstone Park. Mearns killed a mountain lion for Holt once.

Letter from Edgar Alexander Mearns to Theodore Roosevelt

Edgar Alexander Mearns is delighted to be reminded of his upcoming role as naturalist and medical adviser on Theodore Roosevelt’s trip to Africa. Mearns advises Roosevelt on approaches for sterilizing water, medical outfits, and equipment. Medicine for “native ‘boys’ and friends can be conveniently boxed.”

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Edgar Alexander Mearns

President Roosevelt welcomes Edgar Alexander Mearns as the naturalist and medical advisor on his African Safari with “three cheers!” Roosevelt authorizes Mearns to requisition medical supplies from the Army and have them stored pending shipping to Africa, and outlines details of his travel and outfitting plans.
