Six of the ten pages of this edition of the “News and Notes” column are devoted to the visit of a delegation from the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to the Netherlands in October 1989. The TRA, for the first time, held its annual meeting and dinner outside of the United States. The column notes the group’s visit to various sites across the Netherlands, describes the activities of the Roosevelt Study Center, and discusses fundraising efforts to support the Center. The column also discusses efforts to increase the endowment for the TRA and to establish an endowment for the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University.

The “News and Notes” column describes John A. Gable’s teaching a course for the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands in July, 1988, and it also notes two of his other speaking engagements about Theodore Roosevelt. The column features an obituary for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Junior, son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who supported the work of the Roosevelt Study Center. “News and Notes” promotes new publications on Theodore Roosevelt, including the publication of past issues of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal in microfiche form by the Meckler corporation, and it lists some other sources for studying the life and work of Robert Barnwell Roosevelt. The use of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site as a voter registration site is also discussed.

Much of this edition of the “News and Notes” column is dedicated to a report on the annual meeting and dinner of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Dallas, Texas, in October 1988. The report notes the meeting of the Board of Trustees, highlights the annual election of the leadership of the TRA, and discusses the various talks and reports presented at the meeting. The column details the opening of a special exhibit at the DeGolyer Library at Southern Methodist University, “The Incredible Teddy Roosevelt,” that comes from the Theodore Roosevelt collection of Lawrence H. Budner and Doris Albert Budner of Dallas, and it quotes from various Dallas newspaper editorials on Theodore Roosevelt.

The column also announces that the 1989 TRA Annual Meeting will be held at the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands and notes the publication of a previously unpublished article by Roosevelt, “Sou’-Sou’ Southerly,” in Gray’s Sporting Journal. The column includes Roosevelt related news from Buffalo, New York, Bethlehem, New Hampshire, and from the USS Theodore Roosevelt. “News and Notes” concludes with John A. Three works come under consideration in the “Book Reviews” section. Cole Patrick looks at both the 1941 and 1989 editions of the Theodore Roosevelt Cyclopedia. He comments on the work of Albert Bushnell Hart in compiling and editing the first edition, and he quotes from William Allen White’s foreword from 1941. Patrick explains the various additions made to the 1989 edition by John A. Gable of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), including a bibliography, a chronology of Theodore Roosevelt’s life, and a history of the TRA.

Tweed Roosevelt examines Bartle Bull’s Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure and highlights its coverage of Theodore Roosevelt’s African safari of 1909-1910, and he also looks at other figures, British and American, who made safaris. He praises the book’s organization and illustrations but faults it for not giving a sense of who the hunters were as people, Roosevelt included. Marilyn E. Weigold praises Elizabeth Winthrop’s novel, In My Mother’s House, for its “precise descriptions of life in Manhattan in the last few decades of the nineteenth century.” The novel’s main character is based on the life of the daughter of Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, Theodore Roosevelt’s sister.

This edition of the “News and Notes” column reports on the success of the 1988 Teddy Bear Drive sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and the National Park Service, and it notes that President George Bush has placed a portrait of Theodore Roosevelt in the White House’s Cabinet Room. The column also covers the Lawrence J. Saunders Awards for essays in American history conferred by the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands, and Dayton Ritt, commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, reports on the aircraft carrier’s deployments in 1988. “News and Notes” closes with the announcement of a campaign to increase the endowment of the TRA to fund its own activities and to be able to support the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard and the Roosevelt Study Center.

Two books are reviewed and two books are revisited in this edition of the “Book Reviews” section. John A. Gable examines The Letters of Edith Wharton and focuses on what the letters reveal about Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, Theodore Roosevelt’s sister, and Ethel Roosevelt Derby, the president’s daughter. Gable provides portraits of each, and he notes that Edith Wharton “regarded [Theodore] Roosevelt with an awe bordering on worship.” Perry D. Floyd asserts that Garrett and Roosevelt falls short as a biography of the last twenty years of lawman Pat F. Garrett’s life in part because there was not much a relationship between Garrett and Roosevelt. Floyd says that the available evidence cannot support the book’s title.

The column offers extended quotes from Lewis L. Gould and Gable taken from their reviews of Carol Felsenthal’s biography Alice Roosevelt Longworth, and it features a notice (which acts as an advertisement) about the reissue of the Theodore Roosevelt Cyclopedia. The notice quotes from William Allen White’s foreword to the 1941 edition.

This edition of “News and Notes” opens with a report on the 1989 Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York Public Schools. It highlights the growth of the program, notes the involvement of members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), and lists the judges and administrators of the annual contest. R. W. Apple, Jr. of the New York Times, compares President George Bush with President Theodore Roosevelt and writes that the two men had some similarities, such as serving in wartime, but that Bush is less flamboyant than Roosevelt. The column notes that Bush had Roosevelt’s portrait placed in the White House Cabinet Room and his bust placed in the Oval Office.

The column reprints letters from John A. Gable and Theodore R. Kupferman from the TRA leadership and lists various speaking engagements undertaken by Gable. A section examines the history of vice presidents running for the presidency after assuming the office and notes that Roosevelt was the first to be elected after the death of the president under whom he served. The column closes with a reminder for TRA members to purchase a new edition of the Theodore Roosevelt Cyclopedia and to purchase past issues of the TRA Journal on microfiche.

Awards and grants sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) make up much of this edition of the “News and Notes” column and include the conferring of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize, the TRA Police Award for the New York City Police Department, and the annual research grants  from the American Museum of Natural History. The column also covers a reunion of the two branches of the Roosevelt family comprising the descendants of Theodore Roosevelt from Oyster Bay, New York, and those of Franklin D. Roosevelt from Hyde Park, New York. A letter from Elliott Roosevelt, a son of Franklin D. Roosevelt, to John A. Gable of the TRA recounts some shared episodes of Roosevelt family history, including Theodore Roosevelt’s role in Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s wedding and Theodore Roosevelt’s attempt to serve in World War I. “News and Notes” also describes the dedication of a rose garden in honor of Jessica Van Ausdall Kraft at Sagamore Hill, highlights the work of some of the TRA leadership, and promotes the publications of the TRA.

Awards, award ceremonies, and award winners dominate this edition of the “News and Notes” section. Twelve different awards, ten of them directly involving the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), are discussed across five pages of the section. The Theodore Roosevelt Police Award, the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize, the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest, and the John Paul Jones Award won by the commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt are all discussed in their own subsections. A Christopher Award given to the documentary “The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt” and the research grants awarded from the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund at the American Museum of Natural History also merit detailed coverage.

“News and Notes” also touches on the speaking engagements of the TRA’s Executive Director John A. Gable, the passing of Horace M. Albright, a TRA Trustee and former Director of the National Park Service, and a change in the leadership of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site Foundation.
