Charles Laurie McCawley heartily thanks President Roosevelt for his warm congratulations; he and his wife, Sarah Helen McCawley, appreciate his wishes for their happiness. McCawley thinks that Captain McCoy is “a most excellent” choice to fill his position and will do anything he can to assist McCoy in his new duties once he returns from sick leave. General Wood sends President Roosevelt a copy of the Far Eastern Review about the Moro Province, and believes that the Americans have “taken hold of the question of development” far better in Moro Province than elsewhere. Wood also reports that he will try to attend some of the large maneuvers by the Chinese in Honan Province. He believes the U.S. should know as much as possible about these Chinese troops. Finally, Wood explains that he dislikes to lose Captain Frank Ross McCoy, because he is an “extremely valuable officer,” but he understands that he should not interfere with McCoy’s chance to serve Roosevelt directly.

General Wood, Governor of the Moro Province of the Philippines, informs President Roosevelt about the situation in the occupied Philippines. He recommends that reenlistment periods for discharged soldiers be for one year instead of three to encourage the retention of trained troops, especially in the Philippines. He reports on the death of Philippine resistance leader Datu Ali. He recommends that the Hawaiian Islands be fortified against vulnerability to the Japanese, who are refitting Russian battleships. He favors fortifying the area of Manilla rather than the whole of the Philippines, preferring for funds to go towards building the Pacific Fleet. He asks that the garrisons in the Philippines be kept at war strength. He laments the loss of American railroad concessions in China, and warns against allowing Chinese laborers into the United States. He recommends encouraging English, Italian, German, and other European immigration to the Philippines through some form of territorial citizenship, free transportation, or tax incentives.

Lieutenant Johnston provides a first-hand account of Datto Ali’s fall to President Roosevelt. Ali ruled with an iron fist and was Roosevelt’s sharpest enemy for the past two years. Captain McCoy worked out the scheme to strike from the East through the mountains. The troops climbed at alarming angles and along the magnificent Davao River trail to surprise Ali.

Gregory A. Wynn chronicles the search by the Roosevelt Memorial Association (RMA) for a home for its extensive Theodore Roosevelt Collection. Wynn highlights the choice between Columbia and Harvard University, and he highlights the group’s sensitivity to the feelings of Theodore Roosevelt’s widow, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, as well as those of Nora E. Cordingley, the collection’s caretaker at its home at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace. Wynn reveals the disagreements and tensions between members of the RMA and the arguments made for and against each university gaining the collection, and he notes that the New York Public Library was also considered as the repository for the collection.

This edition of “News and Notes” begins with a summary of the events, elections, and speeches at the seventy-first annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) which included the selection of Robert D. Dalziel as the twelfth President of the TRA. The report includes a listing of those elected to the Board of Trustees as well as brief biographies of the past presidents. “News and Notes” also details the conferring of annual awards and prizes supported by the TRA including: natural history research grants from the American Museum of Natural History; the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public schools; the TRA Police Award for the New York City Police Department; and the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize. The section also notes the passing of Archibald B. Roosevelt, Junior, changes in command of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and highlights a lecture by David McCullough at the White House on Theodore Roosevelt.

Reprint of an article originally published in the New York Herald Tribune which describes the dedication ceremonies at Sagamore Hill in June 1953 which featured an address by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The article names some of the prominent guests, quotes from Eisenhower’s brief speech, and describes some aspects of the ceremony such as the presentation of a flag and flag pole for the historic site by the Boy Scouts.
