Roosevelt tells Bigelow that he will look at the pamphlet about starting trouble with Japan, but that he has his doubts. Roosevelt is glad that all is well in Nahant, but hopes that Bigelow gets better soon.

Senator Lodge discusses a number of topics regarding the late Secretary of State John Hay. Lodge bemoans the editing of a publication of Hay’s letters, claiming that Hay was “one of the best if not the best letter writer of his time,” but the publication does not do him justice. He reminisces on the many men of letters he has known in his life, and believes that Hay was the most “brilliant, humorous, sympathetic, [and] witty” among them. Lodge holds more criticism for Hay in his role as a secretary of state, discussing how Hay bungled multiple treaties, took credit for accomplishments that were not his own, and formed poor relations with the Senate.

William Sturgis Bigelow tells President Roosevelt about the visit he had from the Lodge family, who have now departed. Anna Cabot Mills Lodge enjoyed the peace and quiet, but spent some time visiting George A. James, Henry Cabot Lodge’s recently widowed brother-in-law. Senator Lodge appeared invigorated by his success at the Republican National Convention in Chicago, and greatly enjoyed seeing all the newspaper reports praising him. Bigelow wishes that Lodge could continue to be somewhat more relaxed while he is in Europe, but thinks that Lodge is too much like Roosevelt in needing, and loving, to work. Bigelow describes some of the features of the island he is at, particularly the birds and june-bugs. He has heard that Roosevelt is enjoying Irish literature currently, and offers to send him a related encyclopedia.

Senator Lodge regrets President Roosevelt’s decision concerning the Grand Army Encampment but will defer to his better judgment. Lodge would like Roosevelt to persuade Secretary of the Navy Morton to attend the launching of the Cumberland as it would please members of the Grand Army. Lodge also invites Morton to stay with him in Nahant, Massachusetts, where it will be cool and quiet.

President Roosevelt hopes that Senator George Frisbie Hoar will be reasonable, but he will submit Oliver Wendell Holmes’s nomination to the United States Supreme Court regardless. Roosevelt is speaking in Providence, Rhode Island, on August 23, and then will go down to Newport, Rhode Island, so they can christen the baby (Lodge’s infant grandson who shared his name). He will also spend Monday with the Lodges in Nahant, Massachusetts, but Edith Roosevelt will not be able to attend.
