Lawrence F. Abbott and his brother Ernest Hamlin Abbott would be pleased to join President Roosevelt for lunch on September 10th. When he returns in the fall, Abbott’s father Lyman Abbott would surely like to visit Roosevelt at the White House.

President Roosevelt thanks Secretary of the Navy Bonaparte for the letter, and asks him to write to Commander Edward M. Peters of the New Jersey Naval Militia to pass along Roosevelt’s commendation. Roosevelt comments on the pending construction of a battleship, and is exasperated at Representative Theodore E. Burton’s resistance to the expansion of the navy, believing that it is a danger to the country. He suggests, regarding an upcoming naval review, that the members of the congressional naval affairs committees be invited to attend. In a postscript, Roosevelt shares several issues he talked about with Admiral Robley D. Evans, including a change in where he will view some naval target practice.

President Roosevelt sends Secretary of the Navy Bonaparte a telegram from Secretary of State Elihu Root detailing his travel route and requesting the USS Mayflower. Roosevelt needs the Mayflower during the requested time and ask if Bonaparte can send the Dolphin for Root’s use.

Seeing that the president will not be tied up with an extra session of Congress, John Louis Ewell sends President Roosevelt a second invitation. The message is to be delivered by Judge J. M. Dickinson, a former pupil of Ewell’s. It is a request for Roosevelt to dine with the Mayflower Society of Washington, D.C.
