George H. Lyman does not know why Cabot believes Governor Roosevelt is expected in Boston on October 25 but will look into the matter. Lyman approves of Roosevelt’s leadership. He describes Massachusetts as “the hot-bed of copperheads, mugwumps and this dangerous element of traitor.”

Walter Church reports to Lieutenant-Colonel Roosevelt that he stayed in Boston as long as he could, and then headed to Skagway, Alaska, where he is currently practicing law. Church congratulates Roosevelt on the promotion, and expresses his confidence that in time he will be voting for Roosevelt for president. Church thinks Alaska has a great future and hopes that Roosevelt might help him apply to be a United States Commissioner in Skagway, should the position open.

Representative Reed discusses an article in which Civil Service Commissioner Roosevelt is quoted speaking highly of Reed, which Reed could not finish reading for fear he “could not live up to it,” but he has kept the article for when he is “low” in his mind and needs support. Reed praises a letter Roosevelt wrote to the “Goo Goo’s,” a nickname given to Progressive reformers who were in support of good government.
