Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to I. K. Russell

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to I. K. Russell

Theodore Roosevelt responds to a letter to The New York Times in which Robert M. Stevenson, president of Westminster College, quotes a passage from Pearson’s Magazine alleging that as President, Roosevelt made a bargain with the Mormon Church in exchange for electoral votes. The votes were allegedly given in exchange for an end to Republican agitation for an amendment allowing Congress to legislate regarding polygamy, the retention of Senator Reed Smoot, and patronage positions in accordance to the wish of the Mormon hierarchy. Roosevelt vehemently denies these allegations.

Letter from I. K. Russell to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from I. K. Russell to Theodore Roosevelt

I. K. Russell certifies “that you can’t beat it,” sharing how the newspapers assert that by denying “collusion with the Mormons,” Theodore Roosevelt proves the veracity of such claims. Following advice that Roosevelt’s letter appear in Eastern magazines, Russell contacted Colliers, who agreed to publish it. Fellow “muck-rake” magazines McClure’s and Everybody’s then turned on Colliers for going against them. Russell explains how Harvey Jerrold O’Higgins deliberately misquoted and doctored the comments of Joseph F. Smith, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, to appear he approved the continued practice of plural marriage. Russell sincerely thanks Roosevelt for writing the letter.

Letter from Alexander J. D. Haupt to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Alexander J. D. Haupt to Theodore Roosevelt

Alexander J. D. Haupt argues that the home, which is the foundation of America, is being destroyed by “white slavery.” He has seen its effects in his work with Pittsburgh’s Inner Mission, helping in jails and reformatories and aiding “lost girls.” Haupt calls on Theodore Roosevelt to “set us free from the more terrible white slavery,” just as George Washington delivered the country from British rule and Abraham Lincoln freed the nation from black slavery.

Bargain with the Mormon Church

Bargain with the Mormon Church

Robert M. Stevenson, President of Westminster College, Utah, quotes an article from Pearson’s Magazine on Theodore Roosevelt’s alleged “bargain with the Mormon Church” to deliver electoral votes in exchange for policies favoring the Church’s practices and representatives. Stevenson comments on whether the Democratic party will show a “greater regard for national welfare than for party advancement” and if the country will finally recognize the importance of a Federal marriage law.
