Following their meeting at the Outlook office, Reverend Berkemeier invites Theodore Roosevelt to attend and speak at the “Harvest Home” celebration held by the Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School in Mount Vernon, New York. Berkemeier informs Roosevelt the orphanage is a German Lutheran institution, “American in its spirit”, and the celebration, previously attended and enjoyed by Governor Charles Evans Hughes, will be attended by many German Lutherans

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John Hay

President Roosevelt fears that the Lutheran Germans will resent a Catholic as United States Ambassador to Germany and suggests appointing Charlemagne Tower to the position. Roosevelt would like Secretary of State Hay to find out if the Germans would accept Tower as ambassador. Roosevelt is also interested in buying the Panama isthmus instead of leasing it from Colombia.

President Roosevelt requests Emil von Steinitz’s advice regarding the new ambassador to Berlin. During McKinley’s presidency the position was promised to Bellamy Storer but Roosevelt has been informed that German Lutherans would object to Storer’s appointment. If there are objections, Roosevelt intends to send Charlemagne Tower to Berlin and Storer to St. Petersburg or Vienna.
