Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Charles J. Bonaparte

President Roosevelt forwards a letter from David M. Goodrich to Attorney General Bonaparte concerning Henry K. Love’s appointment. In the future, Roosevelt wants portions of his and Bonaparte’s correspondence about men in power “to be published for the sake of the lovers of good literature!” In a postscript, Roosevelt instructs Bonaparte to remove Albert A. Richards, an apparent crook.

President Roosevelt tells David M. Goodrich that there has been an unexpected development relating to the appointment of Henry K. Love. Roosevelt attaches a letter from Love, and says that without an explanation of the statements that he made in it, he does not think he could appoint him.

President Roosevelt tells David M. Goodrich that he has directed that Henry K. Love be given the next vacancy in the marshalship. Roosevelt asks if there is any Senator who would sponsor him, and says that if there is not, then he may have to give Love a recess appointment.

President Roosevelt tells Attorney General Moody that he believes it would be a wise idea to appoint Henry K. Love as a United States Marshal because he is a “first-class man.” In a handwritten addition, Roosevelt says, “He is a rough rider, alas—but then he is also a distant cousin of John Hay!”

Letter from David M. Goodrich to Theodore Roosevelt

Former Rough Rider David M. Goodrich writes to President Roosevelt about the possibility of fellow Rough Rider Henry K. Love being made marshal of the new Fourth Division of the Judicial District of Alaska should it be created. Goodrich believes Love’s record during and after the Spanish-American War proves that he would make a good marshal.
