Uncle James Roosevelt and his wife Aunt Lizzie are wrapped up in local politics and Roosevelt has begun his new job as New York City Police Commissioner. It is difficult work with three colleagues and hampering laws. He wants the legislature to give him the power to remove subordinates without appeal.

He describes a fight between Kermit and daughter Ethel and Alice and Ted have been playing with sister Corinne’s children. Roosevelt updates Anna on their alcoholic brother Elliott who fell recently and laments that he should have died instead of Elliott’s wife Anna. He made a speech in Philadelphia and offers Anna condolences over Alice Lippencott’s death.

Edith is very happy and they have been going out a lot and he lists couples they enjoy being with. Theodore Roosevelt writes that Grace Stackpole Lockwood Roosevelt is visiting and understands the possible promotion Archie Roosevelt may receive. Roosevelt hopes Russia continues to make war. He also recently returned from a trip out west and bought a new horse.

He also updates her on the status of the family. They had a pleasant Fourth of July. Their uncle James King Gracie is sad over the death of his wife. Their brother Elliott is to leave New York Saturday.

He and Edith continue to socialize quite a bit. He feels the Civil Service Commission is accomplishing something but his book is not really coming along. Roosevelt goes for scrambles in Rock Creek Park.
