Natalie A. Naylor offers a detailed survey of the contents of Cove Neck: Oyster Bay’s Historic Enclave and less in the way of analysis or scrutiny though she admits that the book demonstrates “the value of local history.” In her review, Naylor demonstrates how the book places Theodore Roosevelt’s life at his home, Sagamore Hill, in a larger context of his neighbors and relatives who lived nearby in the village of Cove Neck. Naylor relates information about numerous Roosevelt family members and highlights the prominence of Sagamore Hill to the history of the area.

Four photographs, a drawing, and a map, all taken from the book, join the work’s front and back covers in illustrating the review.

Walter M. Dressel offers to send Theodore Roosevelt a copy of the New Harlem Register, a 1903 genealogy book by Henry Pennington Toler documenting the descendants of New Harlem’s original patentees. He offers to send Roosevelt the book if interested.

Regional Supervisor of Historic Sites Hagen provides a brief history of the area containing Pinnacles National Monument, tracing its history from the time of Spanish occupation of the region and the possible first discovery of the Pinnacle rock formations by Captain George Vancouver. While Hagen notes that there is some evidence of prehistoric occupation of the area, he says that it does not appear to have supported permanent populations, and in fact “received little attention until long after the American occupation of California.” He notes that the area is believed to have been used as a hide-out for outlaws at one point.

Kate Roberts Pelissier writes to Ray H. Mattison, historian at Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park, to inquire if she can be of any help regarding questions about the history of the Medora area. Pelissier, whose mother was Margaret Roberts, a good friend of Theodore Roosevelt, gives a brief history of her family’s time in the North Dakota Badlands.

George Alexander Grant, National Park Service photographer, writes to Allyn F. Hanks, Superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park, regarding photographs Grant took of long-time Medora residents. Grant apologizes for the delay in getting the photographs processed and informs Hanks that he has mailed some prints but not all of them. Grant also notes that prints should be sent to Russell Reid, historian for the state of North Dakota.
