Bishop O’Gorman is pleased that President Roosevelt is recovering from the accident that happened in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He congratulates Roosevelt on the settlement of the Anthracite Coal Strike and the appointment of Bishop Spaulding to the Anthracite Coal Strike Commission. Pope Leo XIII has had kind things to say about the American administration of the Philippines and hopes the nomination of Monsignor Giovanni Battista Guidi as apostolic delegate to the Philippines is pleasing to Roosevelt and Governor Taft.

He is pleased that Catholic agitation against the Roosevelt administration is “quelled for good.” The new Apostolic delegate to the Philippines, Monsignor Giovanni Battista Guidi, is an old friends of Ireland’s and is an excellent choice.

Letter from St. Clair McKelway to Theodore Roosevelt

St. Clair McKelway writes to President Roosevelt regarding the proposed handling of the Manila problem in Rome. McKelway encourages Roosevelt to make the Vatican come to the United States and deal with the issues on American soil. Governor Taft is part of the delegation that will attempt to handle the situation. Rome regards the arrangement as an establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Vatican. Mssers. Ireland and Gorman are preceding Taft’s delegation to tell the views of the American government.

Letter from John D. Crimmins to Theodore Roosevelt

President Roosevelt was omitted from the guest list for the celebration of Pope Leo XIII’s elevation to the pontificate and the beginning of his Silver Jubilee year. Crimmins believes that Roosevelt’s omission was accidental and notifies Roosevelt that since the Silver Jubilee extends until March 3 congratulatory letters can still be sent. He also suggests that Bishop McDonnell could convey a message as he will soon be traveling to Rome.

He also asks Roosevelt to talk with Secretary of State Hay on their “project.”
