Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to George Kruck Cherrie

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to George Kruck Cherrie

Theodore Roosevelt encloses a letter which George Kruck Cherrie has requested, in order to share it with Henry Marcus Leipziger. Roosevelt questions whether the letter will impress Leipziger, since the latter has a German name and many Germans feel bitter toward Roosevelt, but he leaves it to Cherrie’s judgment whether to use the letter or not. Roosevelt’s secretary, John W. McGrath, has also suggested Roosevelt include a letter to Thomas W. Churchill, president of the New York City Board of Education.

Letter from Joseph Bucklin Bishop to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Joseph Bucklin Bishop to Theodore Roosevelt

Joseph Bucklin Bishop explains why he did not make more of an effort to correct statements in Hayden Talbot’s article about the Panama Canal. Bishop was instructed to ensure that Talbot did not put words in George W. Goethals’s mouth, and did not feel that he could censor Talbot by going further. Bishop will not be able to see Theodore Roosevelt before he sails for Panama, but mentions that his son Farnham is moving to New York to start a literary career and asks if Roosevelt can help him.

Letter from Farnham Bishop to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Farnham Bishop to Theodore Roosevelt

Farnham Bishop informs Theodore Roosevelt that he feels his trial lectures went well. Two periodicals are interested in his articles. He strives to honor Dr. Jesse William Lazear in all he writes about Panama and asks if there are any memorials to the doctor and the other “yellow-fever martyrs.” While the Panama Canal may be a monument to their sacrifice, Bishop feels there should be one in the United States. He hopes Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt has recovered.
