Letter from Arthur Hamilton Lee to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Arthur Hamilton Lee to Theodore Roosevelt

Arthur Hamilton Lee appreciates the friendly letters from President Roosevelt and asks that Roosevelt and his family leave ample time for their visit to England. It is unfortunate that Roosevelt will not be present for the deer-stalking. Lee is pleased Roosevelt will deliver the Romanes lecture at Oxford. The outcome of the election has seemed unclear from abroad, and Lee is glad to hear Roosevelt’s positive update on William H. Taft. Lee asks if Roosevelt will elaborate on statements from his letters about information that he wants to share in person. If the information could assist Lee in serving his country and there was no other way to discuss it, he would come to the United States, but he assures Roosevelt that a message could be transmitted safely through the embassy.

Letter from Henry White to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt

Letter from Henry White to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt

Ambassador White warns Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt about the Russian Countess Lydia Rostopchine, whose grandfather was governor-general of Moscow during the invasion of Napoleon. Rostopchine intends to give lectures in the United States about her grandfather with the aim of raising money for her niece’s marriage, and she made several inappropriate requests of White. She asked White to appeal to President Roosevelt on her behalf so that she could give a lecture at the White House. White tells Edith not to allow her husband to extend such an invitation. He also informs her that he hopes to be back in the United States just in time to vote for William H. Taft.

Letter from Frederic Jesup Stimson to Theodore Roosevelt

Frederic Jesup Stimson assures President Roosevelt that he never used the term “usurp” in relation to the President in his recent lecture, and that he was instead referring to Congress. While Stimson differs in his opinion on federal incorporation, he believes Roosevelt is impelled “by as high a patriotism” and greater knowledge than himself.

Letter from Barrett Wendell to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Barrett Wendell to Theodore Roosevelt

Barrett Wendell has received President Roosevelt’s two letters in Geneva, where Wendell is spending a few days between his lecture in Paris and those in the provinces of France. Wendell appreciates Roosevelt’s approval of his article. Wendell also wants Roosevelt to know how much he admires him and how Roosevelt’s career has strengthened the ideals of the United States. It is those ideals that Wendell has been trying to “set forth” in France. Wendell says the countries abroad believe the United States to be a new, materialistic country, and he hopes to show why that is not true. Wendell will not be home again until the new term starts at Harvard in the fall.
