President Roosevelt is ending his time as president in “stormy fashion” as everyone in Congress now feels comfortable with attacking him. The press is also on the attack and Roosevelt has started two libel suits against the worst offenders. The statements he will make tomorrow regarding the British in India are being made at the suggestion of Mr. Morley and Mr. Bryce. Roosevelt has received a beautiful Holland rifle from his English friends for use on the African safari.

Theodore Roosevelt expresses his gratitude for receiving a letter in Robert Harry Munro Ferguson’s own handwriting. He wishes he could have seen Isabella Ferguson as well. While in London, Roosevelt intends to have Ronald Craufurd Munro Ferguson arrange some lunches or dinners with only three or four people whom he really wants to see.

Theodore Roosevelt is sending Robert Harry Munro Ferguson a memento of his African trip made from rhinoceros hide. He suggests that Isabella Ferguson could use it as a card case. Roosevelt wishes he could see Ferguson and is dreading an upcoming trip.

Theodore Roosevelt has been unable to write as he is preparing for a trip. He will sail in four days. When Roosevelt returns he will have a political fight that he fears is hopeless. He enjoyed visiting the Fergusons and believes it was beneficial to Archibald B. and Quentin Roosevelt. Roosevelt hosted Cecil Spring Rice and his wife recently. Spring Rice has grown “old and feeble” but remains delightful.

Governor Roosevelt will look after John T. McCutcheon’s “family-in-law” when they visit the Philippines. Roosevelt is fond of Isabella Greenway but she is a traditional Democrat with a “head of wood politically.” He sends his best to Greenway.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to Anna Roosevelt Cowles and mentions his support of her effort to recover fully from her illness of the previous year. He spent a brief time with Robert Munro Ferguson and Isabella Selmes Ferguson and agrees that Isabella Ferguson is quite brave although he believes he was not with Robert long enough to judge the condition of his health. Roosevelt is pleased that Cowles’s son William Sheffield Cowles Jr. is in public school with Cameron Winslow. Roosevelt is enjoying reading William Cullen Bryant’s translation of Homer’s Iliad.
