Presidential snapshot (#10): Excerpt of a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Whitelaw Reid

President Roosevelt tells Ambassador Reid that he would like to share more information with him about his relationship with Kaiser William II of Germany. Roosevelt writes that the voyage of the Great White Fleet was not the first time he had employed the navy to bring about a diplomatic resolution. Roosevelt informs Reid that he believes in “the policy of speaking softly and carrying a big stick,” and he hopes that in his upcoming safari to Africa he can avoid official functions and reporters.

Letter from Frederick Courteney Selous to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Frederick Courteney Selous to Theodore Roosevelt

Frederick Courteney Selous assures President Roosevelt that, in spite of the advice he has heard from Hubert Silberrad and Mr. Buchon, R. J. Cunninghame and William Northrup McMillan will be able to provide him with very good Somali hunters, trackers, and gunbearers for the trip. Buchon and Silberrad had suggested that Roosevelt should use natives who are familiar with the area, but Selous believes that the native tribes in British East Africa are not good hunters and trackers. Selous also suggests storing Roosevelt’s provisions and camp gear in Nairobi while he and Kermit are staying at Alfred Pease’s ranch.

Everybody’s Africa

Everybody’s Africa

In honor of President Roosevelt’s upcoming African safari, C. Bryson Taylor writes about the sights, conditions, hazards, and necessary supplies of a hunting trip in safari. Taylor details the guides, provisions, ammunition, and medicines travelers will need when embarking into the “dark and brooding heart” of Africa. Taylor also weaves in two fictional stories about previous hunting parties, which demonstrate the harshness of the expeditions.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company

President Roosevelt would like a Winchester gun that shoots the same ammunition as his Springfield, and requests more ammunition as well. Roosevelt says the guns should not be sent to Aden to be reshipped, but should be sent to London and thence to Mombasa. Kermit Roosevelt will carry one rifle with him, and Theodore Roosevelt will have another, the balance should be shipped with almost all of the ammunition far enough in advance to receive cable confirmation that they have arrived before Roosevelt himself does.

Letter from the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to Theodore Roosevelt

The Winchester Repeating Arms Company has the model ’96 gun, belonging to Kermit Roosevelt. President Roosevelt’s Springfield rifle has already been returned to him. The Company is also working on finding the best shipping line from London to Mombasa; they will not ship the guns through Aden as was requested earlier because they have no agents they trust there. They will await Roosevelt’s reply in regard to the model ’95 rifle.

The Winchester Repeating Arms Company would like to know how the cartridges should be packed during the journey to Africa. Usually they put 1,000 cartridges to a case. In this case, they can put a few of each kind of cartridge in a case and any quantity that President Roosevelt wants. The cases that are shipped to Mombasa will be tin-lined to prevent water damage.

President Roosevelt wants to know when the ammunition arrives in Mombasa. He has the leather cases that belong to the Holland and Mannlicher guns and only needs the tin cases. Roosevelt’s name should also be put on the ammunition and gun cases in large red letters. He will sail on the Hamburg-American Line steamer Hamburg on March 23.
