Letter from William H. Taft to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from William H. Taft to Theodore Roosevelt

Secretary of War Taft agrees with President Roosevelt on Senator Henry Cabot Lodge’s speech and on the negative press from the New York papers. He describes his trip thus far and makes predictions about his success based on what he has been told. In light of the gerrymandering involving Oklahoma Governor Charles Nathaniel Haskell, Taft asks Roosevelt to help defeat an inadequate constitution in Oklahoma. Taft has asked Joseph L. Bristow to form another report on Panama, and he mentions an editor named Joseph Ralph Burton who has been attacking Roosevelt. Taft discusses the political campaigns and conflicts in the states he is passing through, in particular the political campaigns in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Denver. Taft’s mother Louise Maria Torrey Taft is recovering, and although the trip has been exhausting, Taft has a few days of rest ahead.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to William Allen White

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to William Allen White

President Roosevelt is not in favor of himself or other involved parties making a statement to the press, including William Allen White’s Emporia Gazette, regarding accusations against Joseph L. Bristow, chief investigator into the ongoing post office scandal. Accusations have been made against everyone associated with the scandal and investigation, including himself. He has already taken strong action in New York to address the scandal, but the public, influenced by Democratic and mugwump newspapers, may confuse his actions as complicity with the wrongdoers. Roosevelt worries that this will damage Republican candidates in the fall elections.

Letter from Ralph D. Harbison to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Ralph D. Harbison to Theodore Roosevelt

Ralph D. Harbison assures Theodore Roosevelt that he can win the Republican nomination as a Progressive candidate. Roosevelt can still win and President Taft will be defeated worse than when Horace Greeley ran for President because Roosevelt will certainly receive the vote of every progressive. Harbison’s only advice is that Roosevelt not include the word “reform” in the name of his new party.

Letter from Arthur G. Pearson to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Arthur G. Pearson to Theodore Roosevelt

Arthur G. Pearson, executive Secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association, informs Theodore Roosevelt that the organization is working to raise money for the construction of a YMCA building in Kansas City, Kansas. He asks if Roosevelt could provide the date he expects to return from the west coast. If it would be possible for Roosevelt to be present in Kansas City at the banquet kicking off this fundraising effort, it would significantly contribute to the success of the campaign.

Letter from Harold Irwin Cleveland to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Harold Irwin Cleveland to Theodore Roosevelt

Harold Irwin Cleveland congratulates President Roosevelt on his time in office. He thinks the West is still shocked about the appointment of Postmaster Henry C. Payne, but trusts that Roosevelt’s choice is right. He shares that Paul Morton is pleased with Roosevelt’s take on irrigation, and George Ogden is also regularly saying good things. Jack Raftery, now at the St. Louis Exposition, is still loyal. Cleveland hears that Roosevelt is “shaking the dry bones up in fine style”, but also hears that Secretary Lyman J. Gage and Secretary Wilson behave quite anxiously. He feels that Roosevelt will go forth in courage and honesty.
