Letter from Lyman Abbott to Theodore Roosevelt

Lyman Abbott would support offering naturalization to Chinese and Japanese immigrants if the Japanese were not already a majority in Hawaii. Abbott feels that a law which would give the Japanese political control in a territory that is important to the United States for both military and commercial reasons would be “extremely perilous.” Abbott returns the letter from President David Starr Jordan of Stanford University and encloses an editorial on the “Japanese question.”

Theodore Roosevelt writes to his son Kermit about his upcoming trip to Louisiana. He says he will write a book with chapters on his travels to the Andes, Patagonia, Brazil, and Arizona. Roosevelt says his latest book Through the Brazilian Wilderness is getting recognition but he is unhappy that Scribner’s changed the title. He is sending Kermit South of Panama by Edward Alsworth Ross and looks forward to hearing Kermit’s thoughts on it. Roosevelt also gives his opinions on the War in Europe and President Wilson.

President Roosevelt tells Alexander Graham Bell that while he believes George Ellery Hale to be “an excellent man,” he does not think it would be a good idea to appoint another astronomer as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution right away. Roosevelt comments on several other suggestions by Bell, including Henry Fairfield Osborn, David Starr Jordan, and Charles D. Walcott, all of whom would be good choices, although several have difficulties standing in the way of their selection.
