Letter from Laurence James Oliphant to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Laurence James Oliphant to Theodore Roosevelt

Laurence James Oliphant had previously hoped to visit President Roosevelt last year, but was struck with a severe illness which he is only now recovering from. In going through the letters that accumulated during his illness, he has heard that Roosevelt has been making plans for his safari in British East Africa after leaving the presidency, and offers some recommendations of places that could offer good hunting. Oliphant hopes to renew his acquaintance with Roosevelt when Roosevelt returns from his safari, and is sorry that he could not have been more use sooner.

President Roosevet on British India

President Roosevet on British India

In a response to President Roosevelt’s complimentary speech on British rule in India, the author of this article affirms that Roosevelt’s praise is both prized and justified. The author claims that the British administration in India removed cruel rulers, “established the reign of law” in India, and “indoctrinated” Indians with “the learning and theories of the West.” The author concludes that British administration needs to continue to press for social reform in India, in order to “save” Indians.

Lions of Uganda

Lions of Uganda

This postcard is part of the Roosevelt Tour series. Image shows the different types of lions. Reverse has the description: “LIONS OF UGANDA. The region of the Uganda railway is a zoological paradise. For a mile on each side of the road, animals are protected by law, and lions, ostriches, hartebeestes, hyenas and many other animals may be seen from the train. Sir Harry Johnston describes the country as the most interesting geographically in the world. Mr. Roosevelt could not have selected a finer region for big game hunting. In the Great Rift Valley, herds of lions of as many as 32 have been seen.”

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Ethel Roosevelt Derby

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Ethel Roosevelt Derby

President Roosevelt updates Ethel Roosevelt on recent family news, particularly the activities of her brothers. He went on a “scramble” with the officers of the General Staff and War College. They did not travel fast but everyone made a gallant effort. Roosevelt understands Ethel’s annoyance at the “old bores” always talking to her about her father’s career. He compares her complaint to General Sherman loathing the song “Marching Through Georgia.”
