The material culture of Theodore Roosevelt (#11): The Chicago miracle

The material culture of Theodore Roosevelt (#11): The Chicago miracle

Gregory A. Wynn provides the backstory to a rare item from his Theodore Roosevelt collection. Wynn describes a handbill produced at the time of the Republican convention of 1912 in Chicago that sarcastically claimed that Roosevelt would walk on the waters of Lake Michigan. Wynn examines the biblical roots of the handbill’s message and notes that Roosevelt’s detractors would have produced and endorsed its message. Wynn highlights President Lyndon B. Johnson’s invoking the handbill at the dedication of Theodore Roosevelt Island in 1967.

A photograph of Wynn, a photograph of the Roosevelt statue on Theodore Roosevelt Island, and a full page reproduction of the handbill illustrate the essay. A text box with the mission statement of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) appears at the end of the feature.

Presidential images, history, and homage: Memorializing Theodore Roosevelt, 1919-1967

Presidential images, history, and homage: Memorializing Theodore Roosevelt, 1919-1967

Alan R. Havig examines the effort of the Roosevelt Memorial Association (RMA) to secure a site on the Washington, D.C., mall to erect a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt. Havig argues that it was not the grandiose design by architect John Russell Pope that doomed the proposal, but that many in and out of Congress felt that constructing a memorial to Roosevelt in the 1920s was too soon after his death. Other critics argued that Roosevelt had not yet earned a place among the memorials to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Havig notes that Roosevelt, while denied a monument in the nation’s capital, would gain a memorial on Theodore Roosevelt Island in 1967, and he would earn a place on South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore among the figures that he was deemed unworthy of joining in the 1920s.

Four illustrations, three photographs of memorials to Roosevelt, and the logo of the Theodore Roosevelt Association populate the essay.

About Theodore Roosevelt….

About Theodore Roosevelt….

Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to come to office after the death of a predecessor and then be subsequently elected in his own right. Several other vice-presidents had previously entered office after the death of a president, but were not elected to the office. After Roosevelt, several other vice-presidents have come to office following the death of a president, and were subsequently elected.

News and notes……..

News and notes……..

Much of this edition of the “News and Notes” section revisits and elaborates on articles published in this issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal. “The TR Exhibit at the Johnson Library” quotes from the remarks made by William Davison Johnston, President of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), at the library, notes the gifts given by the TRA to Lady Bird Johnson, and promotes the exhibit’s catalogue. The section also provides excerpts from a letter written by the leadership of the TRA to President Ronald Reagan thanking him for visiting the graves of General Theodore Roosevelt and Quentin Roosevelt in June 1984, and it notes that this issue of the journal is dedicated to Jean Schermerhorn Roosevelt.

The section also touches on some of the awards given to high school students by the TRA and highlights talks on Roosevelt presented at Lamar University in Texas and at Sagamore Hill. It also revisits the TRA Police Award ceremony in New York City and cites the contributions of Paul Russell Cutright and the National Geographic Society to the article on President Roosevelt’s conservation record.

An illustration of a bronze medallion depicting Theodore Roosevelt, two photographs of Lady Bird Johnson, and a photograph of Roosevelt speaking are found in the section.
