Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to William H. Taft

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to William H. Taft

President Roosevelt tells William H. Taft that his playing golf is causing a public stir, and he hopes Taft will avoid it until after the election. Roosevelt agrees with Jones on the religious topic, and sends a letter from John Sleicher with an article by Charles M. Harvey, which might garner support among Jewish voters. Roosevelt feels the East will see a mostly positive political outcome, with the railroad situation being handled fairly and a top man being put in charge at the Chicago headquarters.

Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt continues to recover but it will be many months until she is herself again. The memoirs and poems have arrived.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John A. Sleicher

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John A. Sleicher

President Roosevelt is concerned about what James A. Sleicher tells him about the attitude of the Jews, as he had thought they were favorable. Roosevelt believes that it was only the lack of funds that stopped Charles M. Harvey’s articles from being published. He believes that when New York Governor Charles Evans Hughes returns to the state, he will end up ahead.

Letter from Henry Cabot Lodge to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Henry Cabot Lodge to Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Lodge agrees that the Russian treaty cannot continue unless Russia abides by the terms. Arbitration could strengthen the American position but this would only be an interpretation and the Russians would not change their position. Lodge met with a delegation of Jewish Americans who were reasonable and appreciated Theodore Roosevelt’s efforts. They simply believed that arbitration could never be successful. The campaign in Massachusetts appears promising and Lodge is relieved to hear of Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt’s condition.

Letter from Stephen S. Wise to Theodore Roosevelt

Stephen S. Wise has read about Jacob H. Hollander in the newspapers and is curious whether or not what the media has said about his corruption is true. If it is true, and Hollander received funds from the federal government, Wise is concerned that he is not worthy to be a representative of the country or of Jewish Americans.

The duty of the Jews

The duty of the Jews

An appeal to American Jews to support President Roosevelt and the Republican Party, probably in the election of 1904. The Roosevelt administration’s record of support both for American Jews traveling abroad and on behalf of Jews who are not American citizens but are under duress elsewhere is enumerated. Actions of previous Republican administrations are also related, demonstrating that Republicans are “the champions of the Jews.”
