An inspiring and enjoyable weekend in Boston

William N. Tilchin provides a detailed look at the 2007 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in Boston, Massachusetts. Tilchin notes the committee and leadership meetings of the TRA, and he highlights the field trips to the USS Constitution, Harvard University, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Tilchin’s account also covers the awards presented by the TRA, including the police award for Boston, the Bertha B. Rose Award, and the USS Theodore Roosevelt Junior Officer Leadership Award. Tilchin also notes the various speakers and the topics they addressed in different venues during the weekend meeting.

Fifty photographs populate the report, including five pages with six photographs each, which show the various guests, dignitaries, award winners, speakers, and TRA leaders.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) updates its membership on changes in the leadership of the TRA. Norman Parsons will continue to serve as President until a replacement is found by a search committee and the positions of Treasurer and Secretary have also changed hands, and William N. Tilchin has been appointed as the editor of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal. The article notes that this issue of the journal is dedicated to Regina Louisa Haase Jeffries. A text box with the revised leadership team supplements the article.

Report on the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Buffalo, New York, on October 19, 2002. The article notes the various reports given by officers of the TRA, and it covers the election of a slate of officers as well as members of the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board. The report highlights the TRA’s approval of efforts to expand the Elkhorn Ranch site in North Dakota, use of the TRA website, and changes to the association’s by-laws.

 

Three photographs supplement the report, including two winners of the Bertha B. Rose Award, Paul F. McHale and Kent Conrad, honored for their work in securing Theodore Roosevelt the Medal of Honor. An advertisement for Liberty Title Agency of Garden City, New York, appears at the end of the report.

Annual Meeting 2000 Held in Albany

Report on the 81st annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Albany, New York, in October 2000. The report highlights the elaborate dinner, the keynote speaker, the conferral of the TRA’s Junior Officer of the Year Award for the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and a roundtable of collectors of Theodore Roosevelt memorabilia. The report also gives updates on visits to the TRA’s website, the publication of a TRA CD-ROM, and provides results of the TRA’s annual elections for its officers and leadership. The report includes the speech given by David Allen Woods, the recipient of the Junior Officer of the Year Award, and it provides an update on the status of Pine Knot, Roosevelt’s presidential retreat in Virginia.

This edition of “News and Notes” opens with news of the History Channel’s production of another documentary film about Theodore Roosevelt. The report provides some details about its production and highlights members of the Roosevelt family who have roles in the film. “News and Notes” highlights the journey of “Bully” the moose from Alaska to Colorado to the USS Theodore Roosevelt; the trophy mount was acquired by members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). A posthumous award for Roosevelt from the United States Navy Memorial Foundation and a conservation roundtable sponsored by the TRA receive attention as do a number of personnel changes at Roosevelt related historic sites like Sagamore Hill.

 

The section promotes the TRA’s website, its Theodore Roosevelt CD-ROM, and the association’s next annual meeting. Two photographs from the production of the History Channel documentary and a photograph of Bully the moose with the commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt appear in the section.

Report on the 77th annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in and around Boston, Massachusetts in October, 1996. The report highlights the conferring of several awards sponsored by the TRA: the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to author David McCullough; the Bertha B. Rose Award to Wallace Finley Dailey of Harvard; the Police Award for a member of the Boston, Massachusetts, Police Department; and the Junior Officer of the Year Award to a member of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The report also details the annual elections of the TRA, including the selection of Lawrence H. Budner as the next president, and it notes that tours of Harvard, including the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, were given for those who attended. The report highlights the many years of service to the TRA of P. James Roosevelt and announces that a lecture series will be established in his name.

Six of the ten pages of this edition of the “News and Notes” column are devoted to the visit of a delegation from the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) to the Netherlands in October 1989. The TRA, for the first time, held its annual meeting and dinner outside of the United States. The column notes the group’s visit to various sites across the Netherlands, describes the activities of the Roosevelt Study Center, and discusses fundraising efforts to support the Center. The column also discusses efforts to increase the endowment for the TRA and to establish an endowment for the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University.

The column is illustrated with fifteen photographs from the TRA’s visit to the Netherlands and two more from the fundraising dinner held to support the endowment of the Roosevelt collection at Harvard.
