Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia University, notifies President Roosevelt that Myron T. Herrick will be visiting the White House and plans to decline being appointed Minister to Italy. Butler suggests Roosevelt make it known to Herrick that he does not take this declination personally as Herrick will be a useful Ohio supporter. Butler also suggests that James Speyer be invited to Prince Heinrich of Prussia’s state dinner. Speyer has considerable influence and is familiar to Prince Heinrich.

In a letter to the editor, T. A. Brassey argues that the British Navy should not focus on producing Dreadnaught-class battleships. He cites the recent sinking of large ships, especially during the Russo-Japanese war, to show that even heavily-armored ships are vulnerable to submarine mines and torpedoes. Furthermore, the costly large battleships are vulnerable to accidents at sea, and the more expensive guns on a ship the greater the financial loss when it sinks. Finally, Brassey argues that having more, smaller ships will allow for the great training and promotion of young captains.

The overwhelming consensus is that President Roosevelt has earned the confidence of the American people. Before his death, William McKinley made a promise to appoint Myron T. Herrick as ambassador to Italy. Herman Henry Kohlsaat suggests that Roosevelt write to Herrick as he would be a useful political ally.
