Theodore Roosevelt does not know why Representative Augustus Peabody Gardner made a personal attack on him. Gardner alludes to correspondence from President Taft regarding Senator William Lorimer where Taft encourages Roosevelt to influence Senator Lodge against Lorimer.

Senator Lodge appreciated Theodore Roosevelt’s attitude towards Senator Winthrop Murray Crane during the recent campaign in Massachusetts. Lodge did not know beforehand that Representative Augustus Peabody Gardner was going to publish letters critical of Roosevelt and would have tried to stop Gardner if he had known.
