Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge

Theodore Roosevelt complains about misrepresentations in the press, such as publications appearing in Hearst’s American, and including a recent conflict with Governor Baldwin and previous battles with Senator Platt. In this specific instance, Osborn says the Illinois Legislature should implement the initiative, referendum, and recall as soon as possible. By giving the people the opportunity to vote often, they will not need to resort to rioting to make their voices heard.

Sherman did not support Cullom in hopes of such a favor in return, but rather because of his fitness to serve the state of Illinois. The state legislative session has just closed and Sherman has work to finish up before reporting to Washington. Sherman relays his understanding of proposed policy changes for the Commission and assures Cullom he is glad to follow the original policy.
