Augusta Saint-Gaudens tells Theodore Roosevelt that after doing as he suggested and writing to Thomas J. O’Brien, and Mr. Fox, the secretary of the American Art Department, she received the enclosed letter. Saint-Gaudens would prefer Victor Emmanuel III, King of Italy have the medal made by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which he first selected, and would appreciate any suggestions Roosevelt may have to help her accomplish this.

Telegram from James A. B. Scherer to Theodore Roosevelt

James A. B. Scherer confirms receipt of Frank Harper’s message, and says that all his suggestions will be taken. Many of Harper’s points were already anticipated by himself and Meyer Lissner apart from the hotel lodgings for the women of Roosevelt’s party. He asks Harper to confirm that they would rather go to a hotel in Los Angeles rather than in Pasadena, which Scherer considers would be more private.

Letter from Charles Tuchmann to Theodore Roosevelt

Charles Tuchmann invites President Roosevelt and his wife, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, to stay at the Grand Hotel in Khartum when they visit the city. Tuchmann owns the hotel, which has hosted many Americans and members of the British aristocracy, and its manager is an American naturalized citizen. They would be honored to have the Roosevelts visit, and the price would be “very moderate.” He also requests an autograph for his daughter, a sportswoman who admires Roosevelt’s athleticism.

Letter from Presley Marion Rixey to Theodore Roosevelt

Surgeon General of the Navy, Presley Marion Rixey, writes to President Roosevelt while he is in transit to Honolulu with Governor Carter. The ship is half full because of the recent earthquake and fire in San Francisco, but Rixey is confident that the city will soon recover. Rixey also informs Roosevelt that he has studied the naval station at Yerba Buena and will be making a full report on needed sanitary reforms shortly.
