Letter from Robert Biggs to Theodore Roosevelt

Robert Biggs writes to Theodore Roosevelt to update him on a case Roosevelt brought to the attention of the Juvenile Court of Baltimore, Maryland. The St. Vincent de Paul Society has taken over caring for the family and will continue to check in on their well being. The father, Joseph N. Huber, is now working and his wife, Ida B. Huber, has been able to maintain the house and children, especially thanks to the donation by Roosevelt, which bought essentials for the family.

Eleanor L. Burns, acting secretary of the International Congress of Farm Women, shares with Theodore Roosevelt what the organization is doing to improve rural home life for women, and the context for why the organization exists in the first place. Letter from Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt

President Roosevelt tells the recipient how much he was touched by her letter, and that he understands how hard conditions can be. A mother trying to care for nine children “is not to be blamed for one moment for setting such a dinner as Mr. Arnold describes.” Roosevelt respects the sort of people who work hard to better their conditions, even during adverse times.
