After looking over the maps suggested by Historian Chester L. Brooks, Ray W. Lingk believes that the battle was fought at Square Butte and that the Sully Expedition traveled south of Flat Top Butte and north of Sentinel Butte.

Dana Wright camped near the Diamond C Ranch to study the Sully battlefield near Killdeer Mountain. The owner agreed to donate an acre for the placement of a marker. Wright is currently in the hospital with a jaw problem.

Dana Wright is planning a trip from Fort Rice to study Sully Trail and hopes to stop in Medora, North Dakota. He has visited several sites in southern North Dakota and is anxious to examine the Little Missouri River between Sully Creek and Custer Wash as he is puzzled by the trail in this area.

Historian Chester L. Brooks would like to examine the northeast corner of Flat Top Butte where he believes the skirmish took place and the spring is located. Some of the ammunition found at the site might be from a different skirmish during the retreat from the Little Bighorn. An examination of the ammunition could successfully date the site.

Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park has two recordings of frontier “old timers,” Benton C. Bird and George R. “Shy” Osterhout. The recordings are too fragile to mail but could be transcribed on tape. Superintendent Jay suggests contacting Harry F. Roberts, manager of the Chateau de Mores, who is knowledgeable of the early history of the badlands.
