The text on each page of the letter is scribbled over and “Canceled” is handwritten on the first page. President Roosevelt agrees with Sternburg that the popularity of polo among military officers could damage their military effectiveness. Roosevelt spoke with Prince Henry of Prussia regarding finding a diplomatic position for Sternburg in the United States, but the Prince did not seem open to the proposition and Roosevelt did not press the issue. However, Prince Henry’s visit went well and reduced some of the friction between the United States and Germany.

The state dinner for Prince Henry will be small, and Roosevelt doubts that Douglas Robinson can be made an official on the committee to receive Prince Henry in New York.
