The Board of the Bureau of American Republics has passed the following three resolutions: first, to express to President Roosevelt their sincerest condolences about the death of Secretary John Hay; second, a similar expression be sent to Mrs. Clara Hay; and third, a wreath with the inscription “The International Union of the American Republics” be placed at the funeral.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Elihu Root

President Roosevelt tells incoming Secretary of State Elihu Root that former Secretary of State John Hay had wished to take care of Theodore F. Dwight, a former Assistant Secretary of State and current vice consul. Roosevelt believes he is a good person and the government should continue to support him.

In a handwritten postscript, Roosevelt encloses part of a note from Clara Louise Hay, and similarly hopes to be able to take care of another employee.

George H. Mifflin, of the Houghton Mifflin Company, would like to know if President Roosevelt will consider writing a previously discussed volume on “Civic Duties.” Mifflin has also gained approval from former Secretary of State John Hay’s widow Clara Louise Stone Hay to ask Roosevelt to consider writing a volume on the deceased statesman, based on a recently completed biography, as Roosevelt previously wrote two volumes for the American Statesmen series. This letter was sent by way of Lawrence F. Abbott, of The Outlook.
