Description of the ceremony surrounding the dedication of new library space at Harvard for the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, a reading alcove, and exhibit space across three separate libraries. The article notes the benefactors for the facilities, the speakers at the ceremony, and provides a brief description of each of the new spaces dedicated to furthering the study of Theodore Roosevelt. It also gives a history of the collection and of the Theodore Roosevelt Association’s role in amassing and safeguarding its contents. The article is accompanied by two pictures which show some of the dignitaries at the ceremony and the other is of a young Roosevelt during his student days at Harvard.

Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) John A. Gable provides an update on the various projects undertaken by the TRA in 1976 with an emphasis on the expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt holdings at Harvard University. He notes the establishment there of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial, and he gives an update on the revitalization project underway in the neighborhood surrounding the Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Site in New York City. Gable promotes the reissue of Roosevelt’s biography of Gouverneur Morris, and he lists the various clubs and organizations he spoke to in his role as Executive Director of the TRA. He notes the receipt of four letters from Roosevelt to William T. Hornaday which the TRA has added to the Harvard University Roosevelt Collection.

Gable, President and Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), provide a detailed accounting of the TRA’s outreach and education activities for 1976. Many of these initiatives are covered in more detail in individual articles in this issue of the Journal. The two longest sections of the report cover the expansion of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, exhibits, and reading spaces at the Harvard University libraries and the project to restore the neighborhood surrounding the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site in New York City. The report also covers the annual student contests sponsored by the TRA, the research grants awarded by the American Museum of Natural History, and the publications, such as the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, produced by the TRA.

A listing of the officers of the TRA is included in the report.

A photograph of TRA President P. James Roosevelt with Trustee Dorothy Horton McGee at the Annual Meeting and another of two children admiring a bust of Theodore Roosevelt at the Roosevelt Birthplace accompany the report.

Gable, President and Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), provide a detailed accounting of the TRA’s outreach and education activities for 1975. Many of these initiatives are covered in more detail in individual articles in this issue of the Journal. The longest portion of the Report covers the plan to undertake an urban renewal effort in the neighborhood of the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site on East Twentieth Street in New York City. The planting of trees, painting of buildings, use of brick pavers and other measures are hoped to revitalize the neighborhood and increase visitation to the site.

The Annual Report also features three photographs from the TRA’s Annual Meeting and Dinner as well as two views of the sculpture bust of Theodore Roosevelt created by Gleb Derujinsky, a copy of which was donated to the city of Oyster Bay, New York by the TRA in October 1975.

The Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) was founded shortly after Theodore Roosevelt’s death in 1919, and was later issued a formal charter by Congress. It originally operated side-by-side with a separate women’s organization, which it subsequently merged with. The TRA has helped care for Roosevelt’s homes, developed a collection of documents at Harvard University, sponsored a public speaking and essay contest, and promoted publications about Roosevelt, among other activities.

Wallace Finley Dailey provides a brief history of the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, noting the collection’s beginnings as an effort of the Roosevelt Memorial Association and initially housed at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace in New York City. Historian Ray H. Mattison responds to H. Raymond Gregg, the regional chief of interpretation, regarding a proposal that the National Park Service make an intensive investigation of Theodore Roosevelt’s personal papers in order to gather information to make an archaeological investigation of the Elkhorn Ranch site. Mattison notes that he and others have already made thorough investigations into the relevant materials, and he believes there would be little to gain from retreading the same materials. He agrees, however, that the Elkhorn Ranch deserves a detailed study.

William Coolidge Lane writes on behalf of the Library Committee of the Harvard Union and asks President Roosevelt if he would be willing to donate his literary works with personal autographs. Roosevelt’s writings are in high demand but the Library Committee only possesses a few copies.

Malcolm Storer, the curator of Harvard University Library’s collection of medals, is interested in acquiring medals featuring Harvard alumni. So far, Storer has collected approximately fifty. Many medals will likely be made in President Roosevelt’s honor and Storer requests to be sent copies if possible. The only Roosevelt medal currently housed in the collection is “an inferior campaign one.”
