Shylock Hanna – he is bound to have his pound of flesh

Marcus A. Hanna is Shylock, wearing a robe and holding a paper that states, “Understanding between Wm. McKinley and Mark Hanna. The aforesaid Mark Hanna shall have the Dictation of all Ohio Appointments, etc., etc.” Hanging from his waist are a purse labeled “Boodle” and a “Patronage Knife,” and extending from his pocket are balance scales.

Foraker has been surprised at the opposition to Wright from George Barnsdale Cox and Senator Marcus Alonzo Hanna. Foraker opposes Herman Henry Kohlsaat’s appointment as postmaster general.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Anna Roosevelt Cowles

Theodore Roosevelt is glad sister Anna Roosevelt Cowles is in England. Roosevelt is busy with his work as Police Commissioner and the political campaign. He mentions inviting Uncle Jim [Roosevelt] to lunch with [Mark] Hanna. Roosevelt says his work will be lighter until the New Year and he cares not if they legislate him out of a job. He also gives updates on the family.

President Roosevelt gallops on a Republican elephant towards the White House while being cheered on by Senator Joseph Benson Foraker. Sitting on the fence pouting is Senator Marcus Alonzo Hanna, who was a presidential hopeful in 1904. Foraker is yelling, “Rah! for Roosevelt” while waving his hat and holding a banner which reads, “Ohio State Convention Boom.” Caption underneath the cartoon has Hanna stating, “I can’t see Anything in that to Make a Fuss Over.”
