Samuel L. Parrish writes to Senator Platt about his application for a diplomatic post. Parrish would prefer Athens, as he has studied Greek art and has founded a museum in Southampton. He inquires whether Lodge has been following the Intercalated Olympic Games in Athens, and remarks on the victory of an Irish-American from New York defeating an Englishman in the running broad jump.

President Roosevelt informs William Hale Thompson of the New Illinois Athletic Club that he cannot accept the honorary presidency of the Western Olympian Games Committee of the United States. He has already agreed to be honorary president of the American Committee of the Olympic Games in Athens in 1906, and does not feel that he should accept another similar position.

Letter from Henry Cabot Lodge to Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Lodge explains to President Roosevelt why he got the dates wrong for Hieron II. He had been thinking of Hieron I, but knew he was wrong when Roosevelt, who typically gets dates correct, thought Hiero II had lived a century after Alexander the Great. Lodge also discusses Philistis, the wife of Hieron II, and the coinage on which her head appears. He promises to show it to Roosevelt some time.

Memorandum on George Horton

Assistant Secretary of State Loomis reports that George Horton, former consul at Athens, has a satisfactory consular record but once criticized Secretary of State John Hay’s daughter for her writings. Loomis suggests that Hay would not be pleased if Horton rejoined the service.
