President Roosevelt expresses his concern that Robert Harry Munro Ferguson was recently admitted to Roosevelt Hospital; he strongly encourages Ferguson to take a year off work to fully recuperate. Roosevelt recalls a recent trip to Puerto Rico, where the area’s Secretary of the Interior Laurence H. Grahame impressed local residents with his Scottish kilt.

President Roosevelt describes his trip to Puerto Rico. They were greeted in Ponce by Governor Winthrop Beekman and Commissioner of the Interior Laurence H. Grahame then drove by car to San Juan. He describes the plants of the area as well as the character of Grahame and his wearing of a kilt. He comments on Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt’s hatred of car rides. In a postscript, Roosevelt describes his welcome to Puerto Rico by various military members.

President Roosevelt tells Governor Winthrop of Puerto Rico that he believes Winthrop will find Judge Bernard Shandon Rodey and his wife, Minnie Codington Rodey, to be very nice people, and asks him, along with several other officials, to welcome them warmly to the island.

President Roosevelt hopes Porto Rico Commissioner of the Interior Elliot will stay in his position. However, if he does leave, Roosevelt asks Elliot to give him advanced notice. He wants Laurence H. Grahame to succeed Elliot unless someone else is more qualified.

President Roosevelt is concerned about Robert Harry Munro Ferguson’s hospitalization. He advises Ferguson to take a holiday for his health. Roosevelt recently appointed Laurence Grahame as Secretary of the Interior of Puerto Rico. Grahame is a Canadian of Scotch parentage and is an “awfully good fellow.”
