Albert Shaw introduces P. M. Mattheeff to President Roosevelt. Shaw met Mattheeff many years ago in Bulgaria and again recently, as Mattheeff was the Bulgarian commissioner at the World’s Fair in St. Louis. Shaw recommends Mattheeff to Roosevelt as someone who knows well the situation in Bulgaria, Serbia, and Greece, including the Macedonian question.

President Roosevelt apologizes for his error and corrects his earlier statement that Assistant Treasurer Fish could stay in office while running for Congress. Secretary of the Treasury George B. Cortelyou, as well as several other cabinet officers, have said this would not be fair to others who have had to resign during the nomination process.

President Roosevelt agrees with William H. Taft’s view on tariffs but advises him to tread lightly and cautiously on all policy matters. Roosevelt also advises that Taft resist any attempts by George Barnsdale Cox to push him into the wrong positions, but that he remain on good terms, to avoid coming off as Governor Charles Evans Hughes does. Roosevelt advocates that Taft act as he did when in similar positions, avoiding conflict but fighting when necessary. Roosevelt believes he has taken a good shot at William Jennings Bryan.

President Roosevelt congratulates Samuel S. Koenig on being nominated for New York Secretary of State. Roosevelt has felt intimately involved with the population of the East Side of New York, and part of the reason he was drawn to supporting William H. Taft is because of Taft’s “belief in and appreciation of our citizens such as those whose home is on the East Side of New York.”

Roosevelt asks that Post make sure to show Bonsal every bit of hospitality, but confidentially expresses that he should also keep his guard up.
