The Roosevelt family enjoyed Isabella Ferguson’s recent letter. Edith Kermit Carow and Ethel Roosevelt have returned and had an excellent trip to Panama. Roosevelt outlines some recent business opportunities and a fox hunting trip in Maryland.

Kermit Roosevelt describes his recent visit to Oyster Bay, New York. Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt is recovering after an accident and will be visiting Panama and Jamaica with Ethel Roosevelt. Roosevelt met with David Goodrich about potential employment after graduation.

John Campbell Greenway is disappointed that Theodore Roosevelt was unable to visit. He encourages Roosevelt to write to the mayor and city council of Bisbee, Arizona Territory, regarding the invitation they sent. Greenway continues to be pleased with Arizona and its climate.

Colonel Roosevelt finally has a tent, secretary, and typewriter so he can work on his correspondence. He regrets that he is mostly writing to the families of dead and wounded men. The campaign has been rough with hard fighting but the regiment has performed well. The “cowpuncher” and university men have both been able to show their grit. Robert Harry Munro Ferguson has done well and was promoted to lieutenant. There were many unpleasant experiences but the charge up San Juan Hill “paid for it all many times over.”

After receiving Robert Harry Munro Ferguson’s letter, Theodore Roosevelt wrote to David Goodrich and strongly stated the case. He also wrote to Major Llewellyn about corruption in the election of United States senators. The political situation is “very much mixed” and Roosevelt believes it would be a calamity if he was nominated as a presidential candidate. He does not believe he will be nominated but if there is a “genuine popular movement” he will not be able to decline.

Theodore Roosevelt thanks John Campbell Greenway for the telegram. He is distressed at the events on the Mexican-American border that resulted in the death of Americans. Roosevelt would have handled the incident much more aggressively.

Colonel Roosevelt describes the thankfulness of all the men at receiving the supplies from the Red Cross and he is grateful to Anna Roosevelt Cowles for helping to get those supplies to them. The regiment is now in a permanent camp with ample food, clothing, and care for everyone. He is extraordinarily proud of his group and the way they all work together. Roosevelt is in good health and hopes he can see William Sheffield Cowles sometime soon.

W. Sloan Simpson will accept President Roosevelt’s invitation if he travels East. Simpson has heard that Hal Sayre was killed at Roswell, New Mexico, while visiting Dave Goodrich.
