President Roosevelt is sorry to learn that former Rough Rider George F. Murray shot and killed a man named James German. Roosevelt does not understand whether German was armed or not, but hopes it will be all right. He appreciated receiving a telegram from New Mexico Territory Attorney General Llewellyn about the convention.

Letter from William H. H. Llewellyn to Theodore Roosevelt

William H. H. Llewellyn encloses a newspaper clipping detailing how George F. Murray, a former Rough Rider of Troop G, shot and killed James German. Llewellyn has been asked to work in his defense but does not have the time. Murray is the ninth man from Troop G to have been killed since the war, and Llewellyn believes all of the killings were justified.

The unwritten law will be Murray’s defense

George F. Murray recently shot and killed James German for having “caused the infidelity of his wife” while he was away on business. Murray will stand trial in Kettner tomorrow. Prior to this incident, Murray was a valuable officer in the mounted police service, and had previously served as a Rough Rider during the Spanish-American War.
