Robert C. Kimberly provides a detailed examination of the various afflictions and ailments that marked the life of Theodore Roosevelt from his childhood to his death in January 1919. He describes Roosevelt’s struggles with asthma and poor eyesight as a youth, his battle to control his weight, and details many of the injuries he suffered while living out the strenuous life. Kimberly delves into the serious leg injury Roosevelt suffered in a carriage accident in 1902, his decades long struggle with malaria, his near death experience on the River of Doubt expedition, and the treatment he received after the October 1912 assassination attempt. He notes the many doctors who treated Roosevelt as well as the implications his health problems had for his wife Edith.

The “Book Notes” column features reviews of two historical novels. The Adventures of the Stalwart Companions pairs a young Theodore Roosevelt with Sherlock Holmes to solve a murder in Gilded Age New York City. Marvin R. Morrison outlines the plot of the novel in some detail and says that it “is good reading.” The Bad Lands is a western based on Roosevelt and the Marquis de Mores though neither is a character in the novel. Elizabeth E. Roosevelt provides a very brief review, says the book is not very good, and asks readers to instead read Hermann Hagedorn’s Roosevelt in the Bad Lands.

President Roosevelt asks Representative Loudenslager, Chairman of the Committee on Pensions, if it is possible to pass a bill granting a pension to President Grover Cleveland’s widow, Frances Folsom Cleveland. He notes that the widows of Presidents James A. Garfield and William McKinley are granted pensions. Although Garfield and McKinley both served in the army, their widows received pensions because of their husbands’ service as Presidents.

Charles Willis Thompson writes in the Washington Post that while George von Lengerke Meyer is the nominal Postmaster General of the United States, it is in fact Frank H. Hitchcock, the First Assistant Postmaster General, who runs the Post Office Department.

James Sullivan Clarkson recommends George J. Corey as president of the national organization of commercial travelers’ clubs supporting the Republican campaign. Clarkson warns that Ferdinand Ziegel, who is promoting Corey’s cause, is becoming disaffected. Clarkson also suggests several candidates for chairman of the Republican National Committee and discusses campaign strategy, including states to target to secure the election.

Secretary of the Pentalpha Lodge Crews writes to inform President Roosevelt that he was elected an honorary member of the Masonic Pentalpha Lodge #23 in Washington, D.C. James A. Garfield was a charter member of the Lodge.

The cover features images of Abraham Lincoln, President Coolidge, Charles Gates Dawes, and Ed Jackson. Dawes was Coolidge’s vice presidential candidate and Jackson was the Republican gubernatorial candidate for Indiana.

Hand-held fan with printed music for the presidential campaign of 1908. The front of the fan illustrates all presidents from George Washington through Theodore Roosevelt. Oval photographs at top feature William H. Taft and William Jennings Bryan under the caption “Who’s Next.” The reverse side features a short notation of “The Star Spangled Banner,” arranged by George Braveson, with four verses. The lyrics for the rest of the verses are printed below the notation. The bottom of the fan has two advertisements. The first is an advertisement for Hill & Goodrich, “dealers in Fresh and Salt Meats of every kind.” The second is for “Fish and Oysters in Season. Cash paid for Hides and Skins, Portland St., Morrisville, VT.”

Garfield labeled “Fame.” Those hyenas labeled “306” are pulling on a rope that spells “Slander” tied to the top of the monument. A lightning bolt labeled “Public Contempt” has severed the rope, spilling the hyenas into an abyss labeled “Oblivion.” The number “306” represents the number of delegates who supported Ulysses S. Grant for a third term at the 1880 Republican Convention.
