Life and exploits of John Goodall

This book chronicles the relationship between John Goodall and Theodore Roosevelt. Goodall met Roosevelt in 1884 at the local Stock Men’s Association meeting. Later, Roosevelt worked for Goodall as a cowhand. When Roosevelt was president, he offered Goodall a position as Livestock Superintendent of Indian Agencies at Large.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Corinne Roosevelt Robinson

Theodore Roosevelt relates the chase and capture of three thieves that had stolen his boat. The thieves were captured along the river and then Roosevelt took them overland to the sheriff in Dickinson, Dakota Territory. He read Anna Karenina during the trip and has mixed feelings about the quality of the book but enjoyed Leo Tolstoy’s writing style. Roosevelt requests that Corinne Roosevelt Robinson deliver some flowers to Edith Kermit Carow before Carow travels abroad. Typed copy of original handwritten letter.

T. R. Kelly writes to Theodore Roosevelt about his concerns that the history of the pioneers in the Western United States is being forgotten. Kelly wishes to form a society with the purpose of perpetuating the history of frontier life. This fraternal order will not have a political affiliation, and it will be primarily concerned with the preservation of pioneer history. Because of Roosevelt’s interest in the West, Kelly hopes he can share his opinion on this fraternal order.

Letter from Leander Randon Millican to Theodore Roosevelt

Reverend Millican invites President Roosevelt to a black bear hunt in the mountains of Texas and promises that it will be as public or private as Roosevelt likes. He says that everything will be taken care of for Roosevelt and that he is sure to get a bear because they always do. Millican concludes by praising Roosevelt’s presidency, urging him to run for another term, and asking God’s protection over the president.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John Hay

President Roosevelt writes to Secretary of State John Hay about his tour of the western states. He describes the people and towns as greeting him enthusiastically. Roosevelt also gives short reminisces of his years out west as a cattle rancher. He mentions opening the World Fair in St. Louis, his impression of the Pacific Coast states, the status of many Rough Riders and the violence of frontier life.

As happens with society’s fads and fancies, something of momentary obsession attracts the attention — and, usually, the wit and sarcasm — of cartoonists. Puck in 1902 just did not seem able to embrace the fad of that new indoor game, ping pong.
