Roosevelt states that he is planning to propose Francis J. Heney as Meyer Lissner’s proxy on the executive committee of the Progressive Party and expresses frustration about the tension between the moderate and radical wings of the party leading to dysfunction.

Christopher Columbus Shayne reviews candidates for Chairman of the Republican National Committee and Vice President of the United States. For chairman he favors the selection of someone with passion and energy, and not just loyalty and ability. He recommends Secretary of Commerce and Labor George B. Cortelyou as chairman. For vice president he suggests selecting someone who will get out votes in the next election. He recommends Senator Jonathan Dolliver of Iowa or former Senator from Nebraska David Henry Mercer as vice president. Shayne also provides suggestions on the Republican Party platform.

Frank C. Spencer reviews the history of Wheeler National Monument, including both the history of the area under Native Americans and European explorers, as well as his own involvement in the designation of the area as a National Monument. The area is formed by an eroded lava flow, and Spencer and his companions named various formations many different fanciful names when they traveled there. Spencer was a strong advocate for this location, and helped convince President Roosevelt to set the area aside as Wheeler National Monument.

The outcome of the New York Republican state convention, committing the state’s delegates to support Theodore Roosevelt as the party’s nominee for the presidency at the upcoming national convention, is not surprising. It confirms the party’s stated intention of two years ago. In conjunction with several other states having declared their support, Roosevelt is now the presumptive Republican candidate. What is unusual, however, is that Roosevelt is the first vice president, having succeeded to the presidency through the death of a president, to receive such unanimous support for re-election. Part of the reason for this is that Roosevelt had already been a strong candidate when he was chosen to run as vice president. Another unusual characteristic of the upcoming convention is that it is not “packed” for Roosevelt, but that his candidacy truly reflects the will of the people.
