Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute

Genna Rollins, Secretary of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), highlights the ceremonies and speeches that marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the Roosevelt Study Center (RSC) in Zeeland, the Netherlands, on September 19, 2011. Rollins notes the various speakers from the United States and Holland, and she briefly summarizes their remarks. Rollins also provides a history of the RSC, with an emphasis on its relationship with the TRA, which included funding, donations of books and materials, and providing speakers such as John A. Gable, longtime executive director of the TRA. In one of her endnotes, Rollins examines the history of the Roosevelt family in the United States, noting the the two branches headquartered in Oyster Bay and Hyde Park, New York. 

Six photographs populate the essay, including three of the speakers at the anniversary celebration.

William J. Vanden Heuvel looks at the connections between Theodore Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, especially their shared commitment to American engagement with the world and promoting conservation. Vanden Heuvel highlights Theodore Roosevelt’s winning the Nobel Peace Prize and his support for an inheritance tax, and he notes that both Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt attempted to regulate corporations and the wealthy for the benefit of the working class. Five photographs of Vanden Heuvel accompany the text of his address.

Laura Visser-Maessen describes her trip to Oyster Bay, Hyde Park, and New York, New York in June 2005 in connection with her winning the Theodore Roosevelt American History Award for her work as a Dutch student of American history. Visser-Maessen describes her visits to Sagamore Hill and the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace as well as her trip to Hyde Park to see sites connected with Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. This edition of “News and Notes” opens with news of the History Channel’s production of another documentary film about Theodore Roosevelt. The report provides some details about its production and highlights members of the Roosevelt family who have roles in the film. “News and Notes” highlights the journey of “Bully” the moose from Alaska to Colorado to the USS Theodore Roosevelt; the trophy mount was acquired by members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). A posthumous award for Roosevelt from the United States Navy Memorial Foundation and a conservation roundtable sponsored by the TRA receive attention as do a number of personnel changes at Roosevelt related historic sites like Sagamore Hill.

The section promotes the TRA’s website, its Theodore Roosevelt CD-ROM, and the association’s next annual meeting. Two photographs from the production of the History Channel documentary and a photograph of Bully the moose with the commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt appear in the section. 

Robert D. Dalziel addresses the Roosevelt Study Center (RSC) on the occasion of its tenth anniversary. Dalziel quotes Theodore Roosevelt about the need for military preparedness in times of peace, and he believes that the RSC is uniquely positioned to foster international cooperation. Dalziel says that the Theodore Roosevelt Association has agreed to increase its funding of the annual history awards conferred by the RSC. A text box listing the “1996 Annual Meeting/Dinner Patrons” appears on the second page of the address.

The “News and Notes” column describes John A. Gable’s teaching a course for the Roosevelt Study Center in the Netherlands in July, 1988, and it also notes two of his other speaking engagements about Theodore Roosevelt. The column features an obituary for Franklin D. Roosevelt, Junior, son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who supported the work of the Roosevelt Study Center. “News and Notes” promotes new publications on Theodore Roosevelt, including the publication of past issues of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal in microfiche form by the Meckler corporation, and it lists some other sources for studying the life and work of Robert Barnwell Roosevelt. The use of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site as a voter registration site is also discussed.

The article notes that the Center will focus on the lives of Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Eleanor Roosevelt. It details the visit made to the Netherlands by John A. Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), in November and December of 1985 in which he gave five lectures and visited with various government officials. The article discusses the history of Middelburg and lists the various individuals and entities, including the TRA, that will be involved in its operation and governance.

This edition of the “News and Notes” section opens with a report on the annual meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA). The report notes the election of new members and classes of the Board of Trustees and of the TRA’s leadership for 1985-1986. The section also covers the TRA’s involvement in the Outward Bound program and the granting of the first Theodore Roosevelt Scholarship for that program, the results of the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest for the New York City public high schools, and the passing of Philippa Jeffries Roosevelt. 

The section also covers the “first scholarship conference devoted entirely to TR” at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, which was held in October 1985. It also notes new works on Theodore Roosevelt, a panel on Roosevelt’s foreign policy to be held at the meeting of the Organization of American Historians, and highlights the work of Frederick W. Marks and Serge Ricard on Roosevelt’s diplomacy found in this issue. The section closes with a notice that Edmund Morris has signed a contract to write a biography of President Ronald Reagan.

Awards, award ceremonies, and award winners dominate this edition of the “News and Notes” section. Twelve different awards, ten of them directly involving the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), are discussed across five pages of the section. The Theodore Roosevelt Police Award, the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize, the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest, and the John Paul Jones Award won by the commander of the USS Theodore Roosevelt are all discussed in their own subsections. A Christopher Award given to the documentary “The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt” and the research grants awarded from the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Fund at the American Museum of Natural History also merit detailed coverage.

“News and Notes” also touches on the speaking engagements of the TRA’s Executive Director John A. Gable, the passing of Horace M. Albright, a TRA Trustee and former Director of the National Park Service, and a change in the leadership of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site Foundation.

The “News and Notes” section returns after a hiatus in the prior two issues. The section opens with a listing of the deaths of seven people in 1985 who had some connection to Theodore Roosevelt or the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), and this issue is dedicated to them. The deaths of Peter R. Fisher and John E. Roosevelt are discussed at length in the issue while the life of Harold R. Kraft is examined in this section. The section also covers the visit of a delegation from the Netherlands to Oyster Bay, New York, in connection with the establishment of the Roosevelt Study Center in Middelburg, Province of Zeeland, in the Netherlands. The purpose of the Center, some of its leadership, and the role of the TRA in its founding are examined. 

A brief on the “Theodore” exhibit at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and a notice about a lecture given by John A. Gable at Grey Towers, Gifford Pinchot’s home, complete the section. Two photographs of members of the Dutch delegation in Oyster Bay, New York, are found in the section.

John A. Gable provides a comprehensive report on the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in 1980. He details the TRA’s work to rebuild a bandstand in Oyster Bay, New York, and notes the association’s financial support of Youngs Memorial Cemetery, the adjacent Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary in Oyster Bay, and the American Museum of Natural History. Gable also reports on the association’s support of student essay and speaking contests, additions to the Theodore Roosevelt Collection at Harvard University, and the Roosevelt Genealogical Project. He notes the growth in membership and dues for the TRA, and he details the assistance the TRA has given to numerous scholars and writers and lists the publications that have emerged from their work. Gable closes by citing examples of the TRA’s support of the various historical sites associated with the life of Theodore Roosevelt.
