Senator Hanna transmitted a message to President Roosevelt from the Cleveland and Western Reserve New England Society requesting that Roosevelt issue a proclamation urging the celebration of Independence Day as it was celebrated in the early days of the republic.

The New England Society of Cleveland and the Western Reserve requests a proclamation from President Roosevelt that will “renew the lessons in liberty and patriotism associated with Independence Day.” The society is concerned that there is so little made of Independence day and want to encourage patriotism. They argue that even new citizens of foreign birth are really surprised that so little is made of independence.

Samuel D. Hodgdon has received Vice President Roosevelt’s denial of the slanderous statement and will attempt to stop the circulation of the statement within his organization. Hodgdon invites Roosevelt to make the principal address at next year’s Fourth of July celebration in St. Louis, Missouri.
