President Roosevelt expresses his concern to Rear Admiral Brownson over the explosion aboard the USS Georgia. He is sure it is being investigated to prevent future incidents. Roosevelt orders Brownson to not send any ship to Boston for Old Home Week. He says he endorsed Brownson’s refusal to Senator Henry Cabot Lodge, and Roosevelt has informed the Massachusetts delegation, Governor Curtis Guild, and Mayor John Francis Fitzgerald.

Senator Lodge reassures Theodore Roosevelt that he is in good health, and comments on the state of the Republican party and the upcoming elections. Lodge comments that Roosevelt did a great deal of work holding the Republican party together. While the Western states will elect progressive Republicans, Eastern states may elect Democrats. Lodge regrets that Roosevelt had been drawn into an election contest in New York. Prospects for the Massachusetts Governor election do not look good, but Lodge thinks that he personally will be alright.

Senator Lodge informs President Roosevelt of a request he received from Boston Mayor John Francis Fitzgerald to send naval ships to Boston for an “old home week.” Lodge says Fitzgerald only made the request to bolster his own popularity. Chief of the Bureau of Navigation Willard H. Brownson denied the request passed along by Lodge, but now Fitzgerald is hounding Lodge, so he requests Roosevelt to send him a formal denial to show to Fitzgerald.
