“Independence Day” of the future

A future Fourth of July celebration is depicted where women have gained suffrage and equality. Young and old women ring a bell labeled “Equal Rights.” A notice on the bell tower states “Strike Out the Word Male.” Women emerge from underground and participate in a procession, marching under banners that state “United Order of Matinee Women” and “Higher Culture Division.” The procession passes two statues, one of a woman holding a rolling pin labeled “Erected to the Memory of the First Woman Who Wore Breeches” and the second of an eagle wearing a bonnet, labeled “The American Bird is a Hen Eagle and Lays Eggs. [?] Blake Sculp.”

A painful prophetic vision

A well-dressed, grand old woman sits in a chair, with a comb labeled “Republican Party” in her hair, and newspapers on the floor around her with headlines “Evening Reporter – Commerce Picking Up All Along the Line” and “Morning Verity – Trade Getting Brisk Since the Passage of the Wilson Bill.” She is holding the “Daily Facts – Increased Activity in Business on Account of the New Tariff.” There is a steaming pot of tea on the table next to her. She is imagining a scene where a street in the business district is filled with a procession of women shoppers carrying placards that state, “Under the Democratic Tariff We Live in a Golden Age of Business!!!”, “1896 – We, the Shopping Women of America, Favor the Democrats Because Their Tariff Bill Favors Our Pocket Books!!!”, and “Thanks to the Democrats Shopping is Now a Joy Forever.” Caption: The Republican Party sees the Democrats, in 1896, winning back their old and powerful ally, the “shopping woman.”

A lonely man with arms crossed and chin on his chest sits in a chair next to a small table with a shelf of books and his dog at his feet. On the table rests a tobacco pipe billowing smoke showing the faces of five beautiful young women that are just pipe dreams. Includes lyrics by Breton Braley about a man who does not know how to begin attracting a girlfriend.
