Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Harry Rubens

President Roosevelt wishes he could be present at a meeting where Harry Rubens is scheduled to speak in honor of the late Carl Schurz. As he cannot, he writes to Rubens to tell him of his own appreciation of Schurz’s memory, saying that Schurz upheld the policies of Abraham Lincoln in every arena he was in, and that he was a champion of civil service reform and sound money.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Harry Rubens

President Roosevelt regrets not being able to be present at the meeting in honor of the late Carl Schurz, and instead hopes to be able to express his appreciation for Schurz through Harry Rubens. Roosevelt praises Schurz as having upheld the policies of Abraham Lincoln and as having been a champion of civil service reform and sound money policy. He also holds Schurz’s biographies of Lincoln and Henry Clay in high regard, as well as his other writings.

McMahon. Roosevelt praises McMahon’s service, and comments that he will be difficult to replace.

Kindred spirits: Theodore Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot, and a fitting eulogy

Char Miller recounts the friendship and working relationship between Theodore Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot, and he gives an introduction to a eulogy Pinchot wrote for the Journal of Forestry after Roosevelt’s death in early 1919. In the eulogy, Pinchot discusses the important role that Roosevelt played in establishing the United States Forest Service and in greatly expanding the scope of federally protected forest land.

Three photographs, including two of Pinchot, a 1912 campaign poster supporting Roosevelt, and a page from the Journal of Forestry eulogy supplement the article. The text includes the complete eulogy penned by Pinchot.

Frances Webb Roosevelt

Frances Webb Roosevelt

Frances Webb Roosevelt, widow of one of President Theodore Roosevelt’s grandsons, died on September 11, 1995. The obituary gives an account of how she met Quentin Roosevelt (II), son of Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt, during World War II, and mentions Roosevelt’s military career during the war. After Quentin Roosevelt’s death in 1948, Frances Webb Roosevelt returned to live in Oyster Bar, New York, with her children. She was a talented painter, was active in her community, and frequently represented the Roosevelt family at events. A eulogy was given at her funeral by her son-in-law, Massachusetts Governor William F. Weld.

Peter R. Fisher: The Friend and the Man

Richard E. Oldenburg emphasizes the personal side of Peter R. Fisher in his eulogy at Fisher’s funeral. Oldenburg notes Fisher’s love of history as manifested in his substantial library, his love of old homes, and his undergraduate studies. He says that in a world divided between hosts and guests, Fisher was a host who greatly enjoyed the company of his friends. A photograph of Fisher with his wife Cary Fox Fisher at the wedding of their daughter accompanies the eulogy.

In a eulogy for Peter R. Fisher, John A. Gable, Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA), examines Fisher’s commitment to the preservation of the history of the Town of Oyster Bay, New York, and the greater Long Island area.
