Referees’ plan failed

Two Alabama patronage referees, Joseph O. Thompson and Charles H. Scott, want to replace Deputy Marshal Alfred B. Colquitt with a Republican. Bryan on the matter.

Letter from Thomas Goode Jones to Theodore Roosevelt

Judge Jones regrets that his disagreement with the referees concerning the removal of Deputy Marshal Colquitt has been put into print. Jones argues that the court must be “absolutely non-partisan in the administration of justice.” Since Jones does not believe that “propriety requires a Judge to keep his mouth shut when his friends are libeled,” he is willing to disprove certain statements if this incident is used “for campaign purposes elsewhere.”

Letter to Francis Wayland Palmer from the United States Civil Service Commission

William A. Miller was removed from the position of foreman of the bindery division of the Government Printing Office due to his expulsion from the International Brotherhood of Bookbinders. Civil service rules only allow removal from a competitive position if it will promote the efficiency of the service. As the only reason given for Miller’s removal was his expulsion from the union, the removal will not be recognized and Miller should be reassigned to duty.
