Charles S. Gleed denies disparaging William Allen White. He considers White to be a friend. However, White is supporting Cyrus Leland and opposing Richard C. Kerens based on the opinions of his friends and not personal acquaintance. Gleed knows that Leland will conduct his office well and without scandal.

Commissioner Wright hopes to have William F. Willoughby confirmed as treasurer of Puerto Rico and has written to Senator Foraker. He would like George B. Cortelyou to inform Foraker that the Willoughby appointment is “all right.”

The Ghent, Belgium, consulship went to an Ohio man and James W. Gleed would like Stuart Henry considered as consul in Genoa, Italy. Gleed read William Allen White’s article on President Roosevelt. Many people are supporting Cyrus Leland based on White’s theory. At the end of page 2, White seems to have forwarded the letter on to President Roosevelt, with a note to read carefully the underscored words. White will be happy to give Roosevelt the facts about the suit mentioned if he wishes.
