Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Mabel Thorp Boardman

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Mabel Thorp Boardman

President Roosevelt suggests that, on behalf of the Red Cross Association, Mabel Thorp Boardman send an auditor to San Francisco to keep track of expenditures for disaster relief in the city. Roosevelt does not want to impede immediate relief to the city, but warns that after the emergency “there will be plenty of fools and plenty of knaves to make accusations against us, and plenty of good people who will believe them.” It would be beneficial, therefore, to have a clear accounting of what has been done, and with what resources.

Letter from Charles Phillips to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Charles Phillips to Theodore Roosevelt

Charles Phillips thanks Theodore Roosevelt for his letter and the copy of his letter to Cleveland Doge of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA). He is not surprised by what Roosevelt writes, and it confirms his high regard for him. Archbishop John Ireland recently withdrew his letter endorsing the YMCA since the restrictions against Catholics have not been removed. Ireland encouraged Phillips to continue writing about the good work that can be accomplished through ecumenical cooperation. Phillips agrees with Roosevelt that “it is of the utmost importance…that our people who are straight and decent shall associate together as much as possible without regard to theological differences.”

Letter from Andrew Carnegie to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Andrew Carnegie to Theodore Roosevelt

Andrew Carnegie has a “deep anxiety” about President Roosevelt’s plan to expand the number of ships in the Navy. This reversal of his original disarmament policy could harm relations with other naval powers, particularly Great Britain, which had been committed to reducing its naval arsenal over the past several years. While Carnegie dismisses the possibility of a war, he cautions that such an act will cause unnecessary tension, give Roosevelt the appearance of weakness and indecisiveness, and would bring unnecessary expenditures during a time of economic crisis. Carnegie instead urges Roosevelt to focus his energies on helping economic recovery.
