The secretary for Theodore Roosevelt writes to the Yale University Librarian that Roosevelt is anxious to get a translation of St. Bernard’s “De Contemptu Mundi.” Since it is a Yale thesis, he hopes the librarian will know where to obtain a copy.

John Christopher Schwab informs Frank Harper that no one at Yale has ever written a thesis on Saint Bernard of Clairvaux’s poem “De Contemptu Mundi,” and that no complete printed English translation of the poem exists. He wonders if Harper has confused the poem with a more famous poem of the same name by Bernard of Cluny. There are partial translations of this one, and a complete prose translation.

Tomorrow J. M. Dickinson will be replaced by Henry L. Stimson, then Dickinson will retire to Tennessee. He would like Theodore Roosevelt to know that he has no ill will against the government or the president. He has also enclosed for Roosevelt a dissertation by his friend, Caruthers Ewing, about hookworms.

Harold F. Browne is preparing to write a thesis on professionalism in municipal administration, and asks for Theodore Roosevelt’s views on the subject. Browne believes that many of the people in municipal government only get their position because of political favors, and are not in office long enough to learn how to do the job well. He therefore believes the German system of viewing city administration as a profession would be better.
